em 11/11 - Atualizado há 24 diasUFC 309 marks the long-awaited return of Jon Jones to the octagon to defend his heavyweight belt against former champion Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden in New York on November 16. Check out our full analysis and predictions for UFC 309.
Veronica Hardy x Eduarda Moura
Bet: Hardy wins
Analysis: I’ve already abandoned the hype at the Galpão da Luta gym. Moura, after having problems making weight in the lower division, is now moving up to flyweight. Veronica Hardy is on a good run, coming off the back of three decision wins. She hasn’t beaten very impressive opponents, but if she survives the first round, which is where Moura will come out with everything, she has every chance of winning by decision. Given her fighting style, Eduarda Moura’s gas doesn’t seem very reliable to me, especially if she can’t get the takedowns.
Bassil Hafez vs Oban Elliott
Bet: Hafez wins
Analysis: I see Bassil as more complete, both on the feet and on the ground. And his aggressiveness should make the difference. Elliott has two wins in the UFC, but they were against opponents he should have beaten before the judges’ decision. Both are tough, but I see Hafez with more weapons. Elliott is 26, while Hafez is 32. With regard to height and wingspan, there’s little difference, it won’t influence the fight.
Mickey Gall x Ramiz Brahimaj
Bet: Brahimaj wins
Analysis: Gall is on a terrible three-fight losing streak and will now give his last performance in the UFC. Brahimaj has no less than ten wins by finish. Even though Gall hasn’t been finished in his career yet, I see Ramiz with a good chance of taking him down, controlling him and winning by judges’ decision or, why not, bringing Mickey his first loss by finish.
Marcin Tybura vs Jhonata Diniz
Bet: Diniz wins
Analysis: Tybura, at 39, is no longer so dangerous. Diniz has only recently arrived in the UFC, but he’s flying. He has knockout power and showed good gas in his last fight when it was needed. The only worry is if Tybura wants to invest only in wrestling. But even then, in the clinch, Jhonata will have plenty of options to land a killer blow.
Jim Miller vs Damon Jackson
Bet: Jackson wins
Analysis: Despite their advanced ages, 41 and 36 respectively, both have good stamina. In Miller’s last fight, he was very uncomfortable with King Green’s aggression. Damon has a similar style, fighting forward, which could put Miller under pressure. Jim is a beast on the ground, but the last time Jackson was finished was more than ten years ago. I see Damon with more volume and winning on judges’ decision, I think it’s hard for this fight to end sooner.
Jonathan Martinez vs Marcus McGhee
Bet: McGhee wins
Analysis: I don’t think the UFC likes Martinez very much. In May, he lost to Aldo in a fight in which he was already at a disadvantage due to nerves. He clearly didn’t show all his technique. However, now he’s up against McGhee, who is a beast in all areas and I don’t see him leaving much room for Martinez to fight the way he wants. Marcus has more weapons to win and I think mentally, he comes into the fight more focused.
Chris Weidman vs Erik Anders
Bet: Anders wins
Analysis: Weidman, at 40, is fighting almost in slow motion and his gas isn’t that good either. Anders, if he comes with a game of high pressure and takedowns, could even get a knockout against Chris. There will be plenty of opportunities.
Mauricio Ruffy x James Llontop
Bet: Ruffy wins
Analysis: How can you predict against someone from Fighting Nerds? The stage of the academy is incredible and there are some athletes who are making a lot of noise, including Ruffy. It’s even hard to find athletes who want to fight him! Llontop accepted and should be well paid for it, but in terms of fighting, he’s slower and has little repertoire. Ruffy is a machine on his feet and we haven’t seen his ground game yet, but I don’t doubt that there are some surprises in store. It should be a smooth victory with a good chance of happening before the end of the third round.
Viviane Araújo x Karine Silva
Bet: Silva wins
Analysis: Viviane is a high-level and complete athlete, but at 37, she no longer has the same performance as before. Her last defeats were to athletes who were faster on their feet and who could control her on the ground. Karine Silva has all these qualities and more. She’s young, also very complete, with knockout power and especially finishing power. The only factor that could be a problem is that Karine sometimes tires in the third round.
Bo Nickal x Paul Craig
Bet: Nickal wins
Analysis: The UFC has set everything up for a Bo Nickal victory and he really needs to win convincingly to justify the hype. Paul Craig is coming off two defeats, but he’s a dangerous guy on the ground if his opponent doesn’t give him a chance. But my guess is that Bo will finally justify all the hype with a stylish performance.
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler
Bet: Oliveira wins
Analysis: It’s sure to be a great fight. Both have an aggressive style and a great desire and need to win. Charles in his last fight fought well, but was more restrained… Chandler hasn’t fought for over two years, while he was waiting for McGregor, he’s now 38, and I’m not sure his explosiveness will be effective. Charles can take a lot of beating and his finishes are always dangerous. I doubt it will go all the way to the judges’ decision.
Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic
Bet: Jones wins
Analysis: It’s a strange fight: to be Jones’ last, I think he would need a more dangerous athlete, even though Miocic has a lot of skills, he’s 42 and hasn’t fought for more than four years! It should be a walkover for Jones, he won’t need a decision from the judges.
