UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Ribas 2 marks the return of the organization’s activities in 2024, with a decisive clash in the women’s strawweight at UFC APEX in Las Vegas on January 11.

The event features the debut of Brazilian fighters signed to the Contender Series 2024, and the highly anticipated rematch between Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Ribas in the main event. Check out our analysis and predictions for UFC Fight Night: Dern vs Ribas 2.

UFC Fight Night: Dern vs Ribas 2

Fatima Kline x Victoria Dudakova

Bet: Kline wins

Analysis: The two are coming off defeats, but in very different circumstances: while Kline gave veteran Jasmine Jasudavicius a hard time even though she took the fight at short notice, Dudakova showed smoker’s lungs against average Sam Hughes and by the second round, she was practically dead. I won’t put money on this fight, but I see Kline as having a better chance of winning. And I think this fight has a good chance of going to a decision.

Preston Parsons vs Andreas Gustafsson

Bet: Parsons win

Analysis: I don’t intend to put any money on this one either. First event of the year… very calm! Parson is a jiu-jitsu beast and even though Gustafsson has never been finished and has a wingspan advantage, Preston has a good chance of being able to control and secure victory on points. It’s Gustafsson’s UFC debut and in Contender, he even managed to get a knockout, but he was a very average fighter.

Ernesta Kareckaite x Nicolle Caliari

Bet: Caliari wins

Analysis: The Brazilian’s UFC debut. She was also in the Contender, where she scored a beautiful finish early in the fight. I have more confidence in her abilities, as her base is in the standing game, but she already has a few finishes under her belt, which means she’s evolving.

In front of her, there will be an athlete fifteen centimeters taller, which could complicate the fight on the feet. But if the Brazilian manages to take the fight to the ground, the situation will improve. Kareckaite has never been finished so far, but there’s always a first time. The Lithuanian also has a base in the standing game, but on the ground… she’s not much of a fighter.

Nurullo Aliev vs. Yanal Ashmouz

Bet: Ashmouz wins

Analysis: It’s time for Aliev to lose his 0 in the loss column. He’s currently 9-0, but he’s been out of action for almost two years, I don’t know why, but it was probably an injury. Ashmouz fought a few months ago and had a great performance against Trevor Peek. The Israeli is balanced and can handle himself in all areas. Sorry, I have to repeat myself: I don’t intend to put any money on this fight.

Jose Johnson vs Felipe Bunes

Bet: Bunes win

Analysis: I’m going to give the 35-year-old Brazilian a vote of confidence because of Johnson’s terrible takedown defense. Perhaps because he’s too tall in his category, he simply can’t stay on his feet when his opponent throws a takedown. Bunes has knockout power and the ground is his specialty. I’m just a little worried that Felipe will be practically a year out of fighting.

Magomed Gadzhiyasulov vs Bruno Lopes

Bet: Gadzhiyasulov wins

Analysis: This Bruno Lopes shouldn’t even have entered the UFC. Two attempts at contender, in the first he was knocked out by Brendson Ribeiro (whom Magomed has already beaten) and managed to win in the second attempt, but not in an exciting way. The Russian, who represents Bahrain, has more than enough skills to beat the Brazilian in any area.

Thiago Moises x Trey Ogden

Bet: Moises wins

Analysis: The fight is complicated for the Brazilian. Ogden is on a nice winning streak, showing superior wrestling and control against his opponents. But do you know why I trust Thiago to break this streak? Because of his jiu-jitsu. I see Ogden wanting to invest in grappling, and Moisés is superior on the ground. If the fight goes to the feet, the two are on the same level, then it gets complicated. But something tells me that at some point this fight will go to the ground.

Marco Tulio x Ihor Potieria

Bet: Tulio wins

Analysis: Marco’s debut in the UFC and they gave him a roast to show his skills. Potieria has already been knocked out four times and since the Brazilian is a knockout artist, it will only be a matter of time. Ihor is a guy with questionable fight IQ and will probably want to fight at some point. And then it’s coffin and black candle for him. Metaphorically, of course.

Punahele Soriano x Uros Medic

Bet: Medic wins

Analysis: It should be a spectacle of a fight on the feet. Both are knockouts, but if the fight doesn’t go to the ground, Uros has the touch of death. If Punahele uses his fight IQ, he’ll want to take it to the ground, which will complicate matters… but at normal temperature, Medic is better. They’re both of a similar age, height and wingspan.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Carlston Harris

Bet: Harris wins
Low confidence

Analysis: Did you see Santiago’s last UFC fight? Because I saw him take a beating from a forty-year-old Russian. He was very slow and didn’t have many answers to the questions his opponent threw at him. Harris hasn’t been very impressive either, but he seems to have a bit more will to win. And on the ground, he’s very dangerous.

Christian Rodríguez vs Austin Bashi

Bet: Bashi wins

Analysis: Rodríguez has a reputation for blowing away prospects. He’s done it three times. But I don’t think he’ll do it again now. Austin, even at 23, is different. Very strong with relentless wrestling, he doesn’t give his opponents any room. In jiu-jitsu, Bashi is very dangerous too. And in his last fight, Christian was finished in the first round.

Cesar Almeida vs Abdul Razak Alhassan

Bet: Alhassan wins

Analysis: This fight should set off fireworks. Almeida is very good on the feet, in kick boxing, but on the ground he’s a turtle. And Alhassan, despite being 39, is a thunderbolt inside the octagon, especially when throwing takedowns. And when he does, the ground and pound is heavy. And that’s exactly what I see happening in this fight. Unless, in three months, Cesinha has become a master of takedown defense…

Chris Curtis vs Roman Kopylov

Bet: Kopylov wins

Analysis: The Russian’s flaws lie in his defensive ground game, something he doesn’t need to worry about against Curtis. The American only likes boxing and doesn’t seem to train anything else. And on the feet, Kopylov has more weapons, both in punches and kicks. He’s younger, more agile and even from what we saw in his last fight, he has a good fight IQ and could even get a few takedowns for a better score.

Mackenzie Dern vs. Amanda Ribas

Bet: Ribas wins

Analysis: The two have already fought five years ago with Ribas winning the decision. Although Mackenzie has improved in that time, Amanda has more advantages, especially in the standing game. And Dern can sometimes be a bit rash when trying to get takedowns. If Ribas can keep her distance and score calmly, remembering that it’s a five-round fight, Dern could be beaten by fatigue. It has everything to be the fight of the night.
